An electrical short sparks a fire in the world’s tallest building, leading to a disastrous fire that endangers the lives of many people including Firefighters. The city? San Francisco. The movie? Towering Inferno. The event? The first ever San Francisco Fire Department Film Festival, where viewers will be treated to feature films, documentaries and an eclectic blend of animated and vintage shorts spanning the years 1886 through the present. It all takes place during the weekend of November 5th & 6th at the Main branch of the San Francisco Public Library.

The wide range of scheduled films will cover some of the triumphs and challenges faced daily by valiant Firefighters and selfless EMTs and Paramedics as they perform two of the most demanding jobs in the world.

The blockbuster film, Ladder 49, a portrait of Firefighter hijinks, comradery and the extreme dangers of the job, is also on the schedule of screenings in the Koret Auditorium. On Sunday afternoon, the Latino/Hispanic room will serve as the location for a special children’s movie program which will include the popular animated feature Planes, Fire and Rescue.

Francee Covington, President of the San Francisco Fire Commission and curator for the film festival says, “During the SFFD’s 150th year celebration, we’re pleased to add such a variety of films saluting our courageous Firefighters and gallant EMTs and Paramedics, and I encourage people to come out and see these great films.”

Festival goers will also have an opportunity to ask questions of Firefighters who fought the 5-alarm Mission Bay fire in 2014 and query EMTs and Paramedics regarding the challenges they face as they care for people in San Francisco.
